What Are Genius Weft Hair Extensions? A Micro Weft Guide for Stylists

Genius weft hair extensions, also known as micro wefts, have a thin, flexible seam that can be cut to fit each row. IBE® micro wefts have no return hair and combine a flat seam with the durability of a machine-tied weft. They work with the Invisible Bead Extensions® installation method.
If you already install hand-tied wefts with IBE®, you will use the same foundation and reinstall schedule with micro wefts, so the learning curve is mostly in how you plan and cut each row.
What Are Micro Weft Hair Extensions (Also Called Genius Wefts)?
Micro weft and genius weft are two names for the same product, and stylists use them interchangeably.
IBE® micro wefts use double-drawn Remy hair attached to a thin, flat seam approximately 11 inches wide. They have no return hair—the short “mustache” of folded-over hair found along the top of many hand-tied wefts.
These wefts combine the thin, flexible feel of hand-tied hair with the durability of a machine-tied weft. You can cut them along the seam without unraveling or fraying, sizing each piece to the row you are building.
Genius Weft vs Hand-Tied, Machine and Butterfly Wefts
Four weft types come up most when stylists compare options. They differ in how the hair is attached, how thick the seam is, and whether you can cut it, and our guide to machine weft vs hand-tied goes deeper on the two older types.
| Weft type | How it's made | Seam and feel | Can you cut it? | Return hair | Best for | Works with IBE®? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-tied weft | Hair knotted by hand onto a very thin seam | Thin and most flexible | Can be, but a cut hand-tied weft must be retied or it will shed | Varies by supplier | Seamless rows on fine hair | Yes |
| Machine weft | Hair sewn by machine onto a thicker seam | Thicker, stiffer, very durable | Usually yes | Often present | Sew-ins and lower-cost installs | No, IBE® is not designed for flat or machine-tied wefts |
| Butterfly weft | Varies by supplier | Bigger at the seam and heavier; does not hide as well | Varies by supplier | Varies by supplier | Faster to install, but harder to build fully custom rows | Not part of our method |
| Genius weft (also called micro weft) | Double-drawn remy; thin and flexible like hand-tied, with the durability of a machine-tied weft | Thin, flat, about 11" wide | Yes, along the seam without unraveling or fraying | None on our collections | Custom row widths; fine and textured hair; straight, wavy, and curly | Yes, IBE® was created for hand-tied and micro wefts |
Non-IBE® rows use general industry terms, and supplier versions vary.
IBE®: we teach one method, and it works only with hand-tied and micro wefts or genius wefts. If you are still choosing a method to train in, you can compare weft methods for certification.
Genius Weft (Micro Weft) vs Butterfly Weft
Butterfly weft is covered widely online, but supplier versions vary, so two suppliers selling "butterfly wefts" can be selling different constructions. Most descriptions agree on two points:
- The weft folds over at the attachment point
- Many versions have a built-in area or holes for a bead, so the bead holds the weft with little or no sewing
The main difference from a micro weft is how it attaches. A micro weft is sewn onto a foundation you build first, while many butterfly wefts are held by the bead itself. In our view, butterfly wefts are bigger at the seam, heavier and less customizable, so they hide less well and make it harder to build the fully custom rows that protect the scalp and the health of finer hair. They can be faster to install, but faster is not better. Cutting rules also vary by supplier, so ask about construction, attachment, and cutting before you plan an install.
IBE®: we do not sell butterfly wefts, and they are not part of our method, because the bigger seam and extra weight make fully custom rows harder to build and can cause damage to the scalp due to weight distribution.

Why Stylists Choose Genius Weft Hair Extensions
Stylists choose micro wefts for a few practical reasons:
- It fits any row. Each piece is cut to the row in front of you, from the widest to the narrowest.
- The seam lies flat. A thin, flat seam sits close to the head, so the row stays hidden under the client's own hair.
- There is no return hair to trim or hide. IBE® micro wefts have no short “mustache” along the seam, leaving a clean, flat top edge.
- It holds up across reinstalls. The same wefts go back in at every reinstall, and the seam is built to last through them.
- One weft comes in three textures. Our micro wefts come in straight, wavy, and curly.
There are also a few trade-offs to plan for:
- A cut is permanent. Measure the row before you cut, because a piece cut too short cannot be made longer.
- There is less fullness at the row. On a hand-tied weft, return hair adds some fullness at the scalp and row. A micro weft does not have it, so plan for that with clients who want more fullness at the root.
- Texture and color need a close match. Our curly hair does not relax over time, so confirm the texture and color match at the consultation with a color ring.
Which Clients Are Micro Wefts Best For?
These are the clients micro wefts suit best, plus a note on length.
Fine or thin hair. A flat seam and a width you control mean less bulk to hide. Our guide to hand-tied extensions for thin hair covers planning for a lighter-density client.
Wavy and curly clients. A texture that does not match the client's own raises the risk of matting and tangling, so aim for the closest match. Our curly hair blends best with natural curls tighter than a wave but not coily, and our guide to curly micro wefts covers texture matching.
Length. Our micro wefts run from 14 to 28 inches, with the available lengths varying by texture, and most stylists use 18 to 22 inches for everyday length. Tell curly clients up front that curly length is measured before the hair is permanently curled, so it will look shorter on the head than the length on the pack.
How Micro Wefts Are Installed with IBE®
This section covers the main principles. The full technique is taught in certification.
- Foundation first, then the hair. Micro wefts are installed by building a foundation first and then attaching the hair to it.
- The bead never touches the scalp. Our foundation is a continuous beaded track, and with IBE® there is no contact between a bead and the scalp at any time.
- Weight is spread across the row. The continuous track is built for flexibility and equal weight distribution.
- The hair sits in its natural fall. The foundation keeps the client's hair in its natural fall position without over-directing it. This is especially important for textured hair.
- The method is built for this weft. Every measurement, stitch, and placement in IBE® is designed for hand-tied or micro wefts. IBE® is not designed for flat or machine-tied wefts, and with other weft types we cannot guarantee the full IBE® experience.
Because the row sits on beads, you will also hear this kind of install called micro bead weft hair extensions.

How Much Hair Do You Need?
Bundle size changes with length:
| Length | Bundle weight | Wefts per bundle |
|---|---|---|
| 16" to 20" | 60g | 4 |
| 22" to 24" | 60g | 3 |
| 26" to 28" | 75g | 3 |
A standard install is 2 rows and a full install is 3 rows. Grams per head vary with density, length and the look you are building: about 45g covers one row of volume, and a full short-to-long transformation can take 200g or more. Plan the exact amount once you have measured the rows.
How Long Do Genius Weft Extensions Last?
Micro weft hair lasts on average 7 to 12 months with proper styling care and professional hair products, and home care decides most of where a client lands in that range.
Reinstalls follow the same schedule as hand-tied. Our FAQ recommends the first follow-up at 7 weeks, when you check the grow-out and decide whether the client can go longer. On average, rows are reinstalled every 8 to 10 weeks.

Caring for Micro Wefts (What to Tell Your Clients)
Since home care has the biggest effect on how long the hair lasts, give clients clear instructions before they leave. These basics apply to every texture:
- Brush 3 to 4 times a day and braid the hair before bed
- Sleep on a silk pillowcase or in a silk bonnet
- Use professional, ultra-hydrating products made for extensions. We strongly recommend Goldie Locks which is a protein-free hair care line that keeps your extensions hydrated and manageable.
- Avoid reparative products, which usually contain protein, and skip keratin-based products.
Each texture then needs a little more:
| Texture | Styling | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | Holds a smooth, straight pattern once installed | Can be razor cut; use a fresh razor for every cut |
| Wavy | Scrunch or diffuse to bring out the pattern | The wave is permanent and lasts the life of the hair; it needs more moisture than straight |
| Curly | Scrunch or diffuse; separate and detangle the rows morning and night | The curl does not relax; use moisture-rich products, and never razor cut |

Final Thoughts
Micro wefts give you control over every row, with no return hair to manage. They are easier to work with than a traditional hand tied weft because you can cut anywhere without the weft shedding or unraveling. If you want a method built around this weft, IBE® certification teaches it with a 1:1 mentor, and if you are a client looking for a micro weft install, find an IBE®-certified stylist near you.
Frequently Asked Questions | Genius Weft Hair Extensions
What is the difference between micro wefts and hand-tied wefts?
A hand-tied weft is knotted by hand onto a very thin seam and can be cut, but a cut weft must be retied or it will shed. A micro weft is thin and flexible like a hand-tied weft, with the durability of a machine-tied weft. IBE® micro wefts can be cut along the seam without unraveling or fraying and have no return hair.
What is a genius weft?
A genius weft is another name for a micro weft: a thin weft with a flat seam and no return hair that you can cut along the seam to fit each row. Stylists use the two names interchangeably. At IBE®, this hair is sold as shopIBE® micro wefts in straight, wavy and curly textures.
Are micro wefts and genius wefts the same thing?
Yes. Genius weft is another name for a micro weft, and stylists use the two terms interchangeably. Both describe a thin weft with a flat seam, no return hair, and the ability to be cut along the seam to fit the width of each row.
Is a butterfly weft the same as a micro weft?
The names should not be treated as interchangeable. Butterfly weft construction and attachment methods vary by supplier. Before choosing one, confirm how it is installed, whether it can be cut, and whether it is compatible with your installation method. IBE® does not sell butterfly wefts because they are bigger at the seam, heavier and harder to customize than micro wefts.
Are micro wefts good for thin hair?
Micro wefts work well for many clients with thin hair, because the seam is flat and each weft is cut to the row, which keeps bulk down. Results still depend on careful placement and on matching the amount of hair to the client's own density.
How long do genius weft (micro weft) extensions last?
Micro weft hair lasts on average 7 to 12 months with proper styling care and professional hair products. The first follow-up appointment is recommended at 7 weeks, and on average the rows are reinstalled every 8 to 10 weeks after that.
Are genius weft extensions good?
Genius weft extensions work well for many stylists and clients, especially on fine hair, because the flat seam can be cut to the width of each row and there is no return hair to trim. They do take careful measuring before you cut, and results depend on matching texture and amount of hair to the client. IBE® micro wefts are this type of weft.
Can I use micro wefts with the IBE® method?
Yes. IBE® was created specifically for hand-tied and micro wefts, and every measurement, stitch, and placement in the method assumes one of those two. IBE® is not designed for flat or machine-tied wefts, so a stylist who wants the full IBE® result works with one of those two weft types.
Who can buy IBE® micro wefts?
All stylists, pro and certified, can buy IBE® micro wefts through the IBE® Shop, and stylists who are not certified start by applying for a pro account. Buying the hair does not include training in the method. To offer IBE® installs, a stylist completes IBE® certification, which includes a 1:1 mentor and a Stylist Locator listing.
