Tape-In vs Hand-Tied Extensions: Which Is Better?

by Jasmine Hadjis
tape in extensions vs hand tied

Hand-tied and tape-in extensions can both create length and volume, but they differ in installation method, maintenance, comfort, styling flexibility, and how they interact with natural hair. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right option for your hair type and lifestyle.

What Are Hand-Tied Extensions?

Hand-tied extensions are a hair-friendly technique where lightweight wefts are sewn onto a beaded foundation secured to your natural hair. This method offers stunning length and fullness while prioritizing hair health by reducing stress and preventing common damage, provided it is expertly applied and cared for.

Once installed, they look and feel completely natural, and can be colored, washed, curled, and styled just like natural hair. Many stylists and clients prefer them for their comfort, flexibility, and seamless finish.

How Do Hand-Tied Extensions Work?

In the hand-tied technique, delicate wefts are carefully sewn onto a foundation of small beads attached to the natural hair. Hand-tied extensions prioritize hair health while delivering gorgeous fullness and length, utilizing anywhere from one to four rows to achieve a customized look tailored to your specific needs.

What Are Tape-In Extensions?

Tape-in hair extensions use pre-taped wefts attached directly to natural hair with medical-grade adhesive. They offer a fast and relatively budget-friendly application, but the adhesive tabs can be difficult to conceal and may limit styling options, particularly with updos or finer hair.

The adhesive bonds extension hair and natural hair securely together, laying flat and blending in for a discreet look, as long as the tape stays fully concealed.

Tape ins should always be applied and removed by a qualified stylist. Crooked or improperly placed tape can pull on the roots, hurt the scalp, and even cause hair loss due to improper weight distribution, and adhesive residue can remain on hair and scalp for several shampoos after removal.

How Do Tape-In Extensions Work?

Tape in extensions work by sandwiching a thin section of natural hair between two adhesive-backed wefts. The stylist removes the tape’s backing, places the hair between the strips, and the adhesive bonds them together.

How Long Do Hand-Tied Extensions Last?

Hand tied extensions are a lower-maintenance option well suited to busy, active lifestyles. Generally, they need to be moved up every 7-8 weeks, which keeps the beads close to the scalp and fully concealed. Because there’s no adhesive to degrade, they tend to outlast methods like tape-in.

The hair itself lasts 6-12 months with proper care. Use high-quality, 100% real human hair for best results, and trim every few months to keep them healthy.

How Long Do Tape-In Extensions Last?

Tape-in extensions last longer than clip-ins but not as long as sewn-in or hand-tied extensions. They generally need to be removed and reapplied every 6–8 weeks, depending on hair growth and how well the bonded area is maintained.

During reinstallation, it is crucial to place the tape-ins in the same sections to help prevent uneven growth that may require significant haircuts. With proper care, the wefts themselves can last 6–12 months.

Are Hand-Tied Extensions Bad for Hair?

Removal is gentle and takes just 5-10 minutes in-salon, since there’s no bond to break, no pulling or tearing when extensions are removed, and no adhesive residue.

Are Tape-In Extensions Bad for Hair?

Tape in extensions can damage hair and even cause hair loss, due to the strong medical-grade adhesive bonding the wefts to natural hair. Removal can be difficult and cause discomfort, pulling and breakage, and the alcohol-based solution used to dilute the glue can dehydrate hair and create frizz. Extreme care should be taken during removal and maintenance to keep potential damage to a minimum.

Improperly applied tape ins can lead to bald spots and traction alopecia over time, so they’re not recommended for clients with delicate, fine or thinning hair or sensitive scalps. Always have tape ins installed and removed by an experienced stylist. DIY removal is where the worst damage happens.

How to Care for Hand-Tied Extensions

Proper care keeps hand tied extensions healthy, beautiful, and longer-lasting.

Brush through several times a day, separating each row to prevent matting. Extension hair needs more moisture than natural hair, so use a hydrating conditioner in the shower, follow with a leave-in conditioner or detangler, and seal ends with a serum. Avoid sleeping on wet extensions, and secure hair before bed to prevent friction and tangles.

How to Care for Tape-In Extensions

Tape in hair extension maintenance has two goals: protecting the tapes and taking care of the extension hair (along with the natural hair). Follow these steps:

  • Brush several times a day with a wet brush or extensions brush, working from tips to roots, avoiding attachment points, to detangle hair stuck to the tape.
  • Hold hair at the root while brushing, and avoid tugging or yanking on the tapes.
  • Cleanse with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner 1-2 times a week. Avoid over-washing, scrubbing the wefts, or conditioning the tapes.
  • Blow dry on low heat; air drying can cause itching and make the tape feel sticky.
  • Apply hydrating oils and serums from mid-shaft to ends only, and skip heavy masks or protein treatments.
  • Keep alcohol, oil, and ethanol away from the tapes, since they weaken the adhesive.
  • Use a heat protectant and the lowest heat setting when styling, and never flat iron the bonded area.
  • Visit your stylist to have the tape in extensions removed and re-installed every 6-8 weeks.
  • Braid or ponytail at night to prevent tangles and matting, and avoid sleeping on wet extensions.
  • Wash and detangle your hair after swimming.

Hand-Tied Extensions Pros and Cons

Hand tied extensions are one of today’s hottest trends for their comfort, wearability, and natural appearance, but like any hair service, they come with pros and cons:

Hand Tied Extensions Pros

  • Glamorous volume, fullness and length that looks 100% natural
  • Very little stress on the scalp or the roots
  • No tension, tugging or damage to the natural hair
  • Unlimited styling possibilities (including ponytails, buns and upstyles)
  • Discreet attachments that do not show, even in fine, thin or sleek hair
  • Appropriate for active lifestyles, including swimming, and high temperatures

Hand Tied Extensions Cons

  • Initial installation can require a larger initial investment of both time (2-5 hours) and money ($500-$2,500+ for hair and install combined)
  • Extensions must be moved up every 7-8 weeks as the hair grows out
  • Frequent brushing and maintenance is needed to keep hand tied extensions looking their best

Hand-Tied Extensions Cost

An initial full installation of hand-tied extensions typically costs between $600 and $2,500+, including the hair and labor. Color services may cost extra. Depending on your hair growth rate, you will also need 6–8 move-up appointments per year.

Tape-In Extensions Pros and Cons

Tape in extensions are a quick, lower-cost method for semi-permanent extensions, though the technique can be harsh on natural hair and isn’t right for every hair type:

Tape in Extensions Pros

  • Subtle length, volume and thickness
  • Initial installation is fast (usually under an hour) and relatively inexpensive
  • Sleek appearance, as the tape in extensions lay flat against the scalp
  • Customizable to different hair types and growth patterns

Tape in Extensions Cons

  • Removal is difficult, time-consuming and can cause hair loss (due to the strong glues or adhesives used to bond the hair)
  • Adhesives and chemical removers may irritate the scalp
  • Extensions must be fully removed and re-installed every 6-8 weeks
  • Frequent brushing and maintenance is needed to prevent the hair from matting or getting stuck to the tape
  • Tapes cannot be exposed to styling products, hair oils, or heat tools
  • Not appropriate for delicate, fine or thinning hair, or for people who want to grow out their natural hair, due to the risk of damage
  • Tape ins provide less volume, so they don’t create that long, flowy “mermaid hair” look

Tape-In Extensions Cost

Tape-in extensions typically cost between $400 and $1,400+, including the hair and installation. The total cost varies depending on the salon, the amount and quality of hair used, and the stylist’s expertise. With proper care, the extensions can be reused for up to a year.

Removal and reinstallation is needed every 6-8 weeks as hair grows out, usually costing $150-$300.

Extensions for Short Hair: Hand-Tied vs Tape-In

Extensions for short hair work with both methods, but they blend differently depending on length.

Hand tied extensions on short hair typically use 2-4+ rows depending on how much length or volume you want to add, so a stylist can adjust placement and row count for shorter hair.

Tape in extensions rely on flat wefts, which can be harder to conceal on very short cuts since there’s less natural hair to layer over the tape.

If you’re working with a bob, lob, or shoulder-length cut, ask your stylist how many rows or wefts they’d recommend for your specific length; both methods can look natural on short hair with the right placement, but it takes more precision than a full-length install.

Are Hand-Tied Extensions Better Than Tape-In Extensions?

Hand tied extensions add more volume and are gentler on natural hair, with an installation process free of damaging adhesives, chemicals, glue or tape. Removal is designed to be gentle and does not require adhesive removers or heat.

Tape in extensions have a 1-inch strip of tape that can show in styles like ponytails, while hand tied extensions conceal easily and hold up longer since there’s no bond to degrade.

Hand tied installation takes more time and skill, but the result is healthy, gorgeous hair.

Are Hand-Tied Extensions Worth It?

Hand tied extensions are an investment in your hair’s health and beauty, and they’re worth it: the best method for flowing, mermaid-length locks that protect the natural hair and scalp from damage.

Benefits of IBE® hand tied extensions:

  • Luscious, natural-looking volume, length and fullness
  • No glue, tape, adhesive, chemicals or heat
  • Gentle on the scalp and natural hair
  • Comfortable and easy to maintain
  • Appropriate for active lifestyles, including hot yoga and swimming
  • Rows do not show, even when hair is styled in a ponytail or updo
  • Long-lasting (6-12 months with regular maintenance visits)
  • Quick and painless to remove
